This is all I ever write about, isn’t it…?? 9:20pm, still at work.

Someone a few days ago sent me an SMS asking me a pretty serious question, and for this I answer:

Experience. Lots and lots of experience tells you what’s right and what’s wrong.

p.s – Because I couldn’t go out drinking tonight, I decided that drinking on the job is far more fun :) (kidding)

Still at work

May 17th, 2005

Yep.. Still at work.

The staff at the Auckland site go home at a reasonable hour. I am, however, still plugging away on this laptop which i’ll be taking back to my hotel soon to complete my journey of self-exploitation.

Received some direct criticism regarding a big batch of work that i’d completed today and must admit for a minute there I was pretty pissed about it. The criticism was direct, honest, guided and altogether meaningful, but somewhere down there you realise you just haven’t made the cut and you just have to buck up and get on with it.

I’ve just released version two of the bundle. Let’s see how that goes :)

(ed: don’t get me wrong, it was great and I appreciate it. I just feel….. drained atm and sometimes it’s hard to take on board, even when you directly ask for it and ultimately know you’ll be a better person/worker for it)

I miss being home but love being on the road. I won’t be going back to my current hotel after my next trip as frankly it’s pretty damn average. When you’re on the road as much as I have/will be, you really get a picky taste and high expectations when you’re company is coughing up over $200 a night. Especially when some of the more-frequented hotels we’re staying in for less than $150 at 5 stars. (ahhh, the Sofitel…)

Bah…. fuck it. I’m going home.

p.s – All this week when you’ve seen my posting time. That’s two hours behind what time it really is…… *sigh*….

Yes

May 16th, 2005

This is me officially trying to once again show some love for my website. Hell, I don’t even come here and visit anymore.

Would upload photos, but at 70 cents per minute in the hotel you’re all just going to have to wait until I get back home :)

Devonport

May 15th, 2005

I was sleeping in late until room service decided to wake me from my slumber. This wasn’t entirely bad as I went for a decent walk with a staff member from the Auckland site who was kind enough to take me under wing and show me around.

A short trip over to Davenport, about 2 hours of walking followed by some decent coffee (in a bowl, no less) and eggs bendict and I was in reasonably good shape. I then took the opportunity to hike myself up to the top of a beautiful lookout where they were indulging in one of my must-do pasttimes, Paragliding.

(Photos to be uploaded shortly)

Other than that it’s relatively cold, i’m relatively lonely (still) and not getting all the work I need to do out of the way. Worse still is that in the time that i’m here i’m not going to get everything I want to get completed done….

Worse again is that I gave my manager a list of action items to complete before I got back home. Stupid stupid boy!

SkyJump

May 14th, 2005

What a day it’s been.

Decided that the perfectly sane thing to do at 10am in the morning was to do Skyjump… You know, 192 metres of heart stopping action. :) (and I have some photos as well which i’m sure you’ll enjoy)

Now for those who are saying ‘yeah yeah, but it’s not like bungee jumping’ I ask you this. Have you stood at the edge of a 192 metre tower and jumped off. I know you haven’t so get your ass back where you came from! :) .. (ps – The Auckland tower is the highest continually running jump platform in the world).

After that, I took a day trip over to Waiheke Island and a two-hour tour with Greg who’s motto is that relaxing is the only way to live. I think i’m going to agree with him there.

A beautiful island approximately 30 minutes from the Auckland Viaduct, with a killer view, fantastic people and a much slower pace in life I was escorted almost back in time to when things felt significant cleaner, significantly simpler and altogether less stressed than the world that I enjoy so much today. This is a place where teenage boys and girls haven’t eaten a single meal from McDonalds. Not a bad way to start a new life….

Lonely

May 13th, 2005

Loneliness is a funny thing. It hits at the strangest of times and effects all of us in different ways.

As I sit here, 10pm on Friday night in a beautiful new city (Auckland), i’m overwhelmed with a sense of loneliness which I have not enountered in a very long time.

Can I escape my feelings of guilt, unhappiness and loneliness by travelling, I highly doubt it. I’m on a journey of self-discovery which seems to stretch on forever. I don’t seem to be able to escape my own happiness, or unhappiness for that matter.

In spending all my time alone I have found that you need to respect your distance when you’re away, and take that extra special care to thorougly enjoy the special moments that you share with the ones you love.
