Working Hard, Pissing contests and other such consumption
So Eve is seriously pissed, and not just at me this time. Her bad vibes are directed towards the male-dominated club which dictates a lot of the companies values, careers and (especially) re-imbursement.
Now the particular instance at stake in her current posting, I was actually a part of. So to be fair and to provided a more balanced response to the pissed-offness that is Eve, I will rebutt with the following:
- The one girl (herein known as the ‘DramaQueen’ is exactly that. Concurrent to this the male counterpart has specialised experience in the area we are working on. DQ does not have the experience to do what SB (Stoner Boy) can do with this system.
- The conference was 95% data schemas, relational databases and transaction-based routing, including conceptual models on building and design of such a system. Voice was not the major component, thereby there was no value have voice sitting in the room bored out of their brain for two hours.
- ‘The Boss’ has never excluded the female staffers from input into any system where a configuration change, system update or new system build has been involved. In fact, he doesn’t like the boys club mentality.
- I have personally invested time and energy into projects and felt I was milking blood from stone when trying to get ‘specialised information’ from the above-mentioned female staff when on projects that I was deemed to be PM for.
In Eve’s defence:
- Pissing contest, that’s not the half of it. A lot of things were straightened out over about 12,000 beers and we actually made more progress on day two when we were told to pull our heads in.
- TNB not involving himself in the second day is not becoming in my books. We had disagreements, you get on, you get over it and you get your ass back to the table. This is not show friends, this is show business.

I’m not saying it’s right, i’m not saying it just is. Would I change it if I could, yes. Do I prefer to work with the female staff on getting work completed, absolutely. Is there a way that I can personally change the culture, no. Do I work towards changing the culture through my actions, absolutely.
And yes, i’m going to hell for this post
Loving all your work
