I’ve got no idea where this post is going so….
I think i’m just going to throw a cross-section of what’s going on in my head for something to do… sleep is not for quite some time yet as i’ve just done another site upgrade and my endorphin levels are through the roof.
ed: it’s a sad day when you admit to an endorphin high after rolling out software to pc’s…. d’oh!

A two-pronged segment of thought is both the perception issues about the ‘blogworthiness’ of a post, and also the impact of the web page counter…
When I first started blogging, it was on the up-and-up but still reasonably techie to have a blog. There were some very cool people out there doing the blogging thing, but mainstream acceptance was catching up in a huge way. Today (only 18-20 months on from my very first blog) it’s almost unusual to hear about people who ‘don’t’ blog in one form or another. If they’re not active bloggers, they certainly know about them, can certainly tell you what they represent, and most people can point you to at least one they read on a regular basis.
And somewhere in there it went from nerdy to techie to trendy to cool to mainstream to blog. And whilst billions of pages of crap (mine included) are spewed forth every day on the ‘net I can’t help but wonder how many of those bloggers have modified their writing habits for the benefits of their audience or due to the popularity that they have found.
My blog was never meant to be a ‘public’ affair. It was a place where I wanted to push my thoughts and feelings out to the world, to have people anonymously surf by and read, or become interested viewers watching through the microscope, probing away gently and submissively at my existence.
Through certain channels, my blog gained a certain notoriety with my workplace, and I found myself in the middle of a storm. One one hand I was now bound to be very controlled in the things I said (no more abuse of colleagues or their actions) but I also realised I now had a very powerful one-way outlet to push conservative viewpoints without many readers realising. Was my manipulation meant for purposes of an evil or perverse nature, certainly not. But I did come to realise the power that the blog can hold, or how little affect it can have dependent on the audience, definitely.
If I am to anonymously receive 10,000 visitors a day (I can dream!) then the chances of impact to my life would be fairly minimal. However, give this ddress to 100 of my closest work colleagues and you have a completely different story.
Caraxus was lamenting that his page count had buoyed and then settled to a predictable level thereby causing him to question the nature of ‘are more hits what counts’? Now for someone in the public eye, in the acting profession, there is always a difficult line between popularity and artistic creativity. I’m not saying that they are always linked (take U2 for example), but is the impact for the actor more profound if they are not to receive the 500 desired daily hits?
I have decided to take down my counter when I move to new host and layout. Not because I won’t have stats available to me, but because I want to write for myself and to articulate my life and the lives that I care about in a chronological fashion for all to see. Will the site gain in popularity as it has been doing, one can’t really know. I would expect as the depth of content grows then I will receive more google-related lookups and possibly even a few extra visitors, but do I want this to be my main motivation to blog, no, not for me.
